Conversation Replays with your Older Teen or Young Adult?
Let’s talk conversation replays. Do you ever find yourself parenting in your head… after-the-fact?

Picture the scene: you’ve just had a boundary conversation with your older teen or young adult and now you are replaying it over and over again.
If you’ve found yourself in the replay loop, then I want you to know that, ONE: you are not alone in that!
But TWO… it can be a sign that you are leaning into skills from when your kiddo was younger that might not be working anymore now that they are in a new developmental stage. And you are in a new season of parenting.
And, it can be hard, and frustrating, and confusing when the parenting tools that used to work, aren’t working anymore. But, I hope you’ll find some hope in knowing that neuroplasticity is on our sides and on our children’s sides. And there are tools and skills for this season of parenting that can make a really big difference.
Check out the resources below for even more tools for parenting older teens and young adults while ALSO cycle-breaking (we call that “remothering as we mother”).
Quick-Tool For Those Conversation Replays
Instead of asking yourself, did I just mess that up?
Try asking yourself: “Did I lean into the right communication skill, or communication technique for that particular conversation?”
Because our brains will seek to answer the questions we ask ourselves. So you may find that the small shift of asking yourself a different question will open up a lot of possibility!
I’d love to hear from you in the comments. Have you ever noticed yourself using skills that worked before, but they just don’t seem to be working anymore?
